Updates from Torrington Memory Café
The Memory Cafe will be closed on Thursday 8th June as the Methodist hall will be used as a polling station for the forth coming general election. The next Memory Cafe will be open again on Thursday 22nd June.
On Saturday 1st July the Memory Cafe will have a Bric a Brac stall at the Vicarage fete. If you have any items you would like to donate then please bring them along to the 22nd June meeting. This years outing will be on the 14th September to Bicton Gardens Exeter. The cost will be £15 per person and this includes the coach, entrance to Bicton Gardens, lunch and a trip on the train around the gardens. Photos Bicton Video TourIn October the memory cafe customers enjoyed a trip out to Brookes Garden Centre where we had lunch. At the November meeting Maggie ran a craft session and we are now all looking forward to Christmas lunch at the Torrington Arms.
Just a reminder that you can access a lot of information on our website which is:- www.greattorringtonmemorycafe.weebly.com There are links to other sites which people with dementia and their carers might find useful. We are always looking for volunteers so if you would like to join a dedicated team and can spare two hours a month then contact me and I can give you more information about the role. People who attend the cafe are from all walks of life and of varying ages. Some people may have had a recent diagnosis of dementia whilst others may be worried about their memory and want advice. People who attend find that they continue to come along and value the cafe for its welcoming, informal and relaxed atmosphere. The Cafe offers a listening ear and a couple of hours break from the regular days routines. If you or a family member are affected by memory loss then do come along and get a warm welcome from everyone at the café as well as getting support and information. Just a reminder that the memory café is now open twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays from 10.30 – 12.30 at the Methodist Church at the top of Mill Street.
During May the Café members enjoyed a number of activities including a game of bingo and a ‘guess the tune’ quiz. In June we will be having a ‘chair exercise’ session run by Renata who is quite a favourite at the café. The second session in June will be cancelled due to the Methodist church being used as a Polling station for the EU referendum. In July we will be looking forward to a sing-a-long with Theresa. You don’t have to have dementia to come and join us – there are various reasons for memory loss – stroke, head trauma or age related memory loss. If you have any concerns about your memory you can talk to a NHS professional about your concerns and get advice and guidance. For further information, please contact us. The memory café offers peer support which helps to promotes self care, independence, wellbeing and choice. The cafe enables people to meet regularly with others. It provides an informal environment which provides information about dementia/memory loss, gives practical tips about coping with dementia, provides a social network as well as a forum where advice can be given by health and social care professionals. It also offers emotional support and reduces social isolation.
In March Sarah Jane facilitated an art and craft session making Easter cards. In April we will be having a musical activity and in May a bingo session. The ‘sing a long’ activity held in January went extremely well. Everyone enjoyed the music which brought back memories of the past. Thanks to Theresa for coming along and facilitating the activity.
The March meeting is on Thursday 10th when Sarah Jane will be running an art and craft activity.
