Updates from Torrington Memory Café
The customers and volunteers enjoyed a great Christmas lunch at The Torrington Arms, in December. Our January meeting included a presentation from the Fire Prevention Service who give advice and guidance on keeping ourselves safe.
In February David Clinch will be entertaining us again with his own style of music. We are planning a reminiscence session for the March meeting. (12th). From April we will be open twice a month until October – more opportunity to enjoy the company and activities and access to health care professionals. I would like to thank Mr Folland of Broadwoodkelly for his kind donation following the successful Vintage Gathering which was held in September. I would also like to thank Chris Hoskins of Taddiport for his donation. We rely on donations and funding to keep the memory cafe going. People who attend the cafe are from all walks of life and of varying ages. Some people may have had a recent diagnosis of dementia whilst others may be worried about their memory and want advice. People who attend find that they continue to come along and value the cafe for its welcoming, informal and relaxed atmosphere. The Cafe offers a listening ear and a couple of hours break from the regular days routines. If you require any further information then contact us. David Clinch :This year the members of the Memory Cafe have enjoyed a variety of activities, presentations and musical entertainment. The year ends with our annual Christmas lunch which will be held on the 11th December at the Torrington Arms. In January we will be having a presentation by the fire prevention officer who will be explaining how to keep ourselves safe, but also what individual services they have to offer.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, the volunteers and steering group committee for all their help and support in keeping the memory cafe going.
Due to the closure of the Globe and the lack of disabled access at the Plough, the memory café has now relocated to the Torrington Arms, New Street.
In July the café had a very successful outing to Merry Harriers for lunch. In August we had a very informative talk from Torridge Community Transport, which is a charity providing a service for people who do not have access to transport. If you would like to come to the memory café but do not have transport, then telephone 01237 425522 and you will be able to book a car and a driver. If you would like to be a volunteer driver for the memory café then please contact me. In August, David Clinch entertained us with his own style of music — David has been a regular supporter of the memory café. At our September meeting Kathy Ellis sang songs which brought back memories and gave us all the opportunity to sing along. The entertainment for the October meeting is 'Dogleg' — a duet who have kindly offered their services to bring along their own brand of music. Dogleg Video :The Memory Café has had to change venue again due to the closure of The Globe Hotel. We are now meeting at the Torrington Arms, New Street.
At the first meeting in July, we had a volunteer from Pets as Therapy bring along a PAT dog which everyone enjoyed. On the 24th July we had an outing to the Merry Harriers at Woolsery, where everyone had the opportunity to look around the shops and garden centre, followed by lunch in the restaurant. On the 14th August a representative from Taw and Torridge Transport is coming along to tell us about the services they provide and on 24th August we have a welcome return of David Clinch, who will entertain us with his own style of music. At the September café meeting, Kathy Ellis will be singing a variety of songs which the customers of the café will able to sing along with. If you have a memory problem due dementia, stroke or other illness, then come along to the café and meet others who have similar problems and their friends and supporters. You will get a warm welcome and have access to NHS professionals who give you advice and support. I would just like to mention the sad passing of our Chairman Graham Bowen. Graham was a founder member of the Memory Café and also an active member of Devon Senior Voice. Graham will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers go to his wife and family. The Great Torrington Memory Café is a place where people who have a memory loss, and their families/friends, can visit to support each other and share information and experiences. The Café provides a friendly, informal and relaxed atmosphere for visitors to drop by; enjoy a free cup of tea/coffee and cake/biscuits; meet other people in similar circumstances to themselves, and talk with members of the healthcare team to get advice, information and support about living with memory loss. There is also usually some activity provided each session, covering a wide range of interests.
In July we will be having a visit from the Pets as Therapy volunteers, and later on in the month we have organized an outing to Merry Harriers Garden Centre at Woolsery. If you need any further information about the Memory Café and the services we offer then please contact us. The Memory Café was open twice in May. A talk from Legal Solutions on the 8th, and a reminiscence session on the 22nd.
On the 12th June, Sue Howell will be presenting a 'Laughter Workshop', and on the 26th June, a representative from Oakhouse food will be giving a presentation about their products. The Memory Café is still operating from the Globe Hotel until further notice. Do come along and enjoy the activities, share experiences with other people who are having similar problems and their families and friends. At every meeting there are NHS professionals who are there to give advice and guidance about issues related to memory loss. |
