Updates from Torrington Memory Café
This month (April) we had David Clinch come along and entertain us with his own brand of music. Thanks David for your support. There was the usually crowd there socialising and enjoying the refreshments. At every meeting there are NHS professionals who are there to give advice and guidance about issues related to memory loss.
The May meeting is on Thursday 8th and we have a representative from Legal Solutions coming along to give a talk on trust funds, inheritance tax and care costs. This should be a very interesting talk and relevant to the people who attend the Café. The Café will also be open on Thursday 22nd May when we will be having a reminiscence session. The café is operating from the Globe Hotel. Do come along and enjoy the activities, share experiences with other people who are having similar problems and their families and friends. David Clinch :

GREAT TORRINGTON MEMORY CAFÉ is awarded £ 3,711.00 from Devon Community Foundation
Those people attending the February memory café meeting enjoyed a very interesting talk about the Cavaliers – their history and fund raising events. This month (March), we were going to have some armchair exercise but unfortunately this has been cancelled until later in the year. Due to additional funding from Devon Community Foundation, we are able to put on additional memory café meetings during the summer months. As well being open on the second Thursday of each month we will also be open on the 4th Thursday May through to August. Our Chairman, Graham Bowen, has decided to retire from this post this year. On behalf of the steering committee, volunteers and memory café members we would like to thank him for all his hard work and dedication to the memory café. If anyone is interested on the role of Chairman of this very worthwhile group then please let me know. Forthcoming activities:
* March 13th - Nimble Limbs (chair exercises) * April 10th - David Clinch, musician * May 8th - Presentation from Legal connections about inheritance tax/care costs * June 12th - Laughter Workshop, Sue Howell * July 10th - Reminiscence Workshop Happy New Year to all our members, volunteers and supporters.
We held a coffee morning at the end of November to raise much needed funds for the Memory Café. I would like to thank everyone who helped and especially those people who attended. We have also been fortunate to get donations from the Rotary and the Cavaliers – a heartfelt thank you from everyone at the Memory Café. In November we had a Christmas lunch at the Globe which started off our Christmas festivities – thanks to the staff for a wonderful meal. At the December meeting we were fortunate enough to be entertained by the Torridge Male voice choir, an exceptional performance which we all thoroughly enjoyed. The February meeting is to be held at the Plough Arts Theatre and we will be having a presentation by the Cavaliers. A Memory Café is a place where people with dementia and their families/friends can visit to support each other and share information and experiences. The Café provides a friendly, informal and relaxed atmosphere for visitors to drop by. You can enjoy a free cup of tea/coffee and some cake, meet others in similar circumstances, have the opportunity to talk with members of the healthcare team and get advice, information and support about living with dementia. Free leaflets are available. The cafe operates on a drop-in basis on the second Thursday of the month between 10.30am-12.30pm. The December meeting will be held on the first Thursday (5th) and will be downstairs in the Plough auditorium. The Torridge Male Voice Choir has kindly agreed to come along and sing a selection of Christmas songs. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the members, their supporters and the volunteers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
At September’s meeting we were entertained by David Clinch who is a regular supporter of the memory café. At the October memory café meeting, we heard about ‘Dogs as Therapy’ and met the local organisers, as well as some of their specially-trained dogs. The November meeting will be in the Globe, where we will all be enjoying a two-course Christmas lunch (tickets only). I would like to take this opportunity to thank our team of dedicated volunteers and steering group members who make the memory café possible.
If you would like to be a volunteer – just two hours per month – or would like to take on the role of volunteer fundraiser or find out more about the memory café and what we have to offer, then please get in touch. |
